Here I Am, Lord
In the economics theories, there is an "ostrich effect." The ostrich effect is the avoidance of apparently risky financial situations by pretending as if they were not exist. The name comes from the well-known misconception that ostriches bury their heads in sand to avoid danger. Ostriches run over 45 mph when they are pursued by predators. A myth says that when ostriches cannot outrun their predators, they stop and bury their heads in the sand when they do not find a hiding place. We do the same things ostriches do. How often do we bury our heads like ostriches knowing that the secret will be turned out soon! In the today's reading, we get to know that the prototype of the ostrich effect was: Adam and Eve. 찾으시는 하나님 "Adam, where are you?": God who is seeking 하나님께서 Eden 동산을 창조하시고, 거기에 인간을 두시고, 그들에게 선악과를 따먹어서는 안 된다는 삶의 rule을 정해 놓으셨습니다. God created the Garden of Eden and put Adam and Eve there, giving them a single rule: do not eat the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden. However, they broke the rule and ate the fruit. They covered their bodies with the leaves of a fig tree and hid themselves among the trees of the garden when they heard the sound of the Lord. God called to them, "When the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?" It was when "the cool evening breezes were blowing," not "in the noon under scorching heat and bright sunlight." In the darkness and chill they were in fear. Hearing the sound of God, who was walking about in the garden, they reflexively hid themselves. There was no place to hide themselves before God's fiery eyes. But they hid themselves like ostriches. Like the cockroaches exposed by sunlight, they scattered in all directions on the light of God. An English journalist sent telegraphs to eleven high-ranking politicians writing, "Hide yourself for what you have done has been exposed." The next day, no one appeared. Everybody hides. They hid themselves behind the tree not to be found. They hid themselves with the leaves that will be withered as soon as the sun rise. "Sh..." In anxiety and nervousness, we hid ourselves from God. God, who wants to have good relationship with us, is still calling us: "Where are you, Adam." 'Adam' means 'man.' 'Adam' could be you or me, or anybody. "Where are you, Myunghoon?" I try to hide myself. I try to hide quickly by burying my head in the sand. However, where is a place to hide our whole bodies from the eyes of God? Where are you? Few years ago, all Korea was in ado to search for the abducted child Yang Jisung. After five days of searching for her, her mother appeared on TV, calling her daughter's name: "Jisung ah.~ Jisung ah.~ Where are you?" There was no answer, for she was already dead. Silence was her answer. In the parable of the prodigal son in Luke, the second son took all his inheritance and set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country and he began to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. When it was dark, the cold wind permeate his heart. At that time, he heard the calling of his Father, "Son, my son. Where are you? Do you eat anything and do you sleep well? Come back to me." Listening the voice, he responded. "Father, I am here, dying with hunger and cold. Can I go back as I am?" "Of course you can. Whatever wrong you did, if you repent it, I will forgive you. Because you are my son." The Prodigal son turned his way and ran to his father. He said, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men." In the Bible there is another man who responded His calling: Jonah. When God gave Jonah a mission to Nineveh, he tried to run away. He hid himself from the presence of God getting aboard a ship headed towards Tarshish. He took a seat that no one could find him in the dark and damp area below the deck, where he lay down and fell sleep. God interfered in his way and caught his ankle by breaking a storm. When the lot fell on Jonah, he heard God calling: "Jonah. Where are you? Jonah, what are you doing? Where are you going?" He answered, "Lord, I am here, dying in a dark and damp place." It was his response to his calling. II. “Mea culpa.” II. "I am here fearing You, Lord." A sinner's response: mea culpa Now let's return to the latter part of today's reading: verse 10 to 13. "He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid." And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?" The man said, "The woman you put here with me--she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." The calling for Adam is not only for Adam as a person, but as generic name "Adam," that is, mankind. God is calling each of us, "So-and-so, where are you?" What should our answer to His calling be? Shall we answer like Adam, "I am hiding myself for fear of You." Or "It was because of Eve whom you gave to be with me." Or will you say, "It is God's fault because He gave me Eve," blaming God. We are used to blaming others. However, God is asking you, "Where are you?" It is "I" whom God is asking to blame. They say, "I am the victim." Really? Is the blame not on me, but on you, or he, or God who made you and him? God is not asking, "Where are you Mrs. Kim or Mrs. Lee?," but "Myunghoon, where are you now?" He is asking to someone else, but to me: "Isn't it your fault?" God wants me to confess as the first-person singular. He wants to listen to my confession vis-a-vis. No one can interfere to appeal my problem between me and God. Neither, my wife, nor my children, nor my attorney. No others could answer for Jisung. The dead cannot reply for himself. The Prodigal son realized who he was and came to his Father. That was the response to God's question: “Where are you?" No one else could help the prodigal son, but he himself had to answer acknowledging his helpless status and returned (repented) to his Father. No one could substitute for him. He responded to the calling of God, "I am here." Jonah responded, "I am here, dark, dank and the lowest place. It was my fault." "Throw me into the sea and punish me." There was no one in the ship who could do for him. Jonah took all responsibilities on himself and plunged into God. That was Jonah's answer to God's calling. Do not try to hide into darkness when God calls, "Where are you, Adam?" It is foolish to insist sticking to the darkness and not come forward to God. Please don't make excuses for others when God asks, "How did you do that?" Let's not say it's because of 'that person'. Let's not say it's because of 'the snake,' the structural evil. Let's not say it's because of 'God who gave Eve to me.' Be honest. “Mea culpa.” This is not anyone's fault, but mine. "I chose it." "I ate it." Let's answer to the Lord, "Because of me," without lying. Let me confess that I am the main culprit. Let us take responsibility for our crooked path. And let us leave our path to the grace of the Lord. A rabbi said, "When we stand before God on the day of judgement, God will not blame you for not being a Moses or an Abraham, but for not being yourself." When Adam and Eve, who were shivering with darkness and cold, responded to God's call; Jonah, who ran away from God's face, heard God's voice in the middle of a storm; and the Prodigal son wasted all his father's money and turned his face toward God, God gave them new leather clothes, gave them a new mission, and put a new ring on them. God will give us one more chance when we realize our faults and comes forward to God. "Where are you, now?" Can't you hear His voice? Answer him not before late. “I am here. I hid myself because I sinned." Come to Jesus. "Forgive my sins and give me a new life." Say, "It was all my fault. I ate. I went away. I wasted all your money but I am coming home."
